'07 Deerfield & Westfield Rivers
by Walt Geryk
May 21,2007

Just a quick up-date on what's happening, then back on the water.
The Deerfield River, from top to bottom, has been fishing very well. With water temps on the upper flowing around, 45-47degrees and a little warmer as you venture down stream, the trout have been active during 3 different bite times, with the middle bite being the best. Low water fishing, obviously, has been easier as the fish are concentrated more into runs and pools, but if you want to test your current fly fishing abilities and learn new tactics for high water, then I suggest you try a drift boat trip. See more water, fish runs and pools differently and become a much better fly fisherman by days end. Float trips are scheduled around releases, so some days you can have some low water wading early and then a float trip by late morning.
The Westfields are fishing very well with the East Branch absolutely on fire this past weekend with many fish averaging 14" and just over a pound. Walt's Vertical Tip and new Bob B Method produced fishin high water runs that would inaccessible by other fly fishing drifts.
Two day trips have been popular here in Western Mass this spring. These trips offer both wade and drift boat trips designed around both flow releases and bite times.
Western Mass trout fishing offers up great fly fishing opportunities all summer long. When planning your summer trip, keep in mind the Deerfield River is a popular place for tubers, Kayakers and many other white water enthusiasts, so the weekends can be very crowded, best fishing is had during the week.

Working on getting up NY spring steelhead and W.Mass photos soon.

May 29 and 30th are available, with many great dates available for June, July and August. Take Advantage of these times in Western Massachusetts.

Left is Ralf Russomando, of Va, on a two day float and wade trip on the Deerfield River. Ralf is showing off one of his many trout caught and released during the two days.
Right is Ed Shapiro, of Mass, on a drift boat trip. Ed was only able to fly fish from the boat due to recent surgery. "If it wasn't for the drift boat opportunity offered by you, my fly fishing may have been on hold until next year. Thanks for your consideration and keeping us comfortable, all while putting us on healthy trout like the one in the photo.
