With what has been a short winter and a nice break in the weather for now is starting to get us into our spring preparation. Cleaning anti-reverse reels, checking the lines and making sure all my other essentials are in place and ready to go.
Finally, all the flies are restocked and ready for water, long runs and screaming reels with steelhead and trout testing our knots, patience and abilitites to bring the fish to net and the fly to cast another time.
Tie up your favorite stone flies, wooly buggers and large streamers for April and May on the Salmon River.

"Act like a Fly & Think like a Fish"
A new Hog Island Drift Boat is due here shortly, and then it’s off to the Salmon River to float down possibly the most sought after fresh water trophy, The Steelhead.
There will be some new regulations come this fall, so for you flyrodders it’s time to start thinking about streamer stripper lines and custom mini-sink tips and become accustomed to using them with confidence.I promote and teach the use of these lines. I have designed and make my own custom mini-sink tip lines, ready for your use, that have been proven fish getters over the past 5 years. Shortly, I may even offer them to everyone.
Until the air temperatures remain in the mid 30’s and higher daily, fly rodders may have to wait, struggle or both or use a noodle type rod and spinning reel with 6 to 8 lb test. If you have both set ups, you could find yourself fighting steelhead instead of fighting fly line freeze ups. Lite line, tiny shot with your favorite fly pattern works just fine and keeps us fishing until the air warms.
Massachusetts should be opening up by late April or early May for the flyrodders, but we need the water temps to get up. If you start out early and in cold water, I always find Mickey Finns and Black Nosed Dace work well when fished deep and slow.
Hatcheries are reporting another good year of healthy and large trout which are destined for Western Mass’s waters as soon as temps, runoffs and pHs are suitable for the trout’s survival.
See you on the water,
Walt
.........Roasting a long time friend and client
Bruce Abbott, of Florence Mass, is one of the luckiest flyrodders I know and has a great sense of humor.. He's fished with me for 5 seasons now and continues to land trophies every trip. I must let everyone know that Bruce started fly fishing 6 years ago, gets on the water about 4 days a year, which his casting style shows, but he's living proof that anyone can fly fish, have fun and be successful at it.
Let's see what Bruce does in his 6th season. We know he enjoys being the top dog for their trips, but it also comes with a price. The price is that he's bought dinner for 5 years in a row for everyone, and now will he break his wallet again, or will dinner be on someone else's trophy catching experience this April?
