New York's Fall Forecast

LOOKS AWSOME!

Reserve Now for your fall salmon season trip!

Lake Ontario is offering up plenty of large Salmon up in the 26 pound class and heavier as the summer moves along.
These fish are averaging nearly 4 pounds heavier then last year at this time.
Looks like our fall season is shaping up as predicted with plenty of fish with heavier weight and meaner attitudes.

Western Mass Continues to Produce Healthy Large Trout

Trout season on the Deerfield and Westfield Rivers continues to be outstanding. Many hookups daily and almost as many large rainbows and brown trout landed. High water on the Deerfield, not to worry. We welcome these flows while floating the upper reaches in my new Hog Island Drift Boat. Now we're able to plan great outings on this terrific tail water fishery and enjoy scenery that was saved for the rafters. You'll find the Deerfield River enthusiasts are courteous and friendly! This is great because we're all just trying relieve some stress and have safe fun while enjoying this great outdoor resource. If your into strictly wading, as long as the Westfields hold up, you'll find this smaller river is a great place to be.
Be prepared to do some walking on the Westfield!

The Deerfield and Westfield's are giving up some nice fish to dries, wets and nymphs, depending on conditions and time of day. When things seem to slow down, try "Big'n Uglies", stimulators and other attractor patterns as these have been bringing up fish during the mid day doldrums. Approach rising fish with a similar pattern that you see on the water. When small on the surface, try size 16 rs2's in olive, or try a dry of choice and a flymph dropper or even a larger nymph pattern. When running sub-surface, I prefer to use two patterns about 18" apart. Once we have a winner, we'll either go to one fly or fish two of the same and try for doubles. Remember to pinch your barbs smooth if possible, no sharp edges. Maybe some day a hook company will mold a hook with a smooth bump in place of the barb. I find this smooth bumb holds fish just fine, does not fall out easily and best of all does not tear up the flesh.

Preserve Your Trophy

Carry a camera and a measuring tape then use the formula, which is fairly accurate, the weight = (length X girth X girth / 800 = lb.) and this should give all the info needed for bragging rights without over
stressing the fish. Once you land that trophy fish of a lifetime, it's your choice to kill and have mounted and no one should condemn you for your decision, but there is a better option. You can send a high quality photo and measurements to a professional taxidermist where they can make a reproduction of the fish that you released.
Planning on releasing a fish, then handle it as little as possible and return into the water ASAP! Don't hang it from the gill plate, keep the fish in a natural position as possible, horizontal. When releasing the
fish be sure to be facing it upstream in slower moving water, this may require some moving of the fish slowly forwards and back to help the flow of water through its gills, take your time for proper revival, which can take up to 8-10 minutes. You'll know when the fish is ready as it will have good balance and will start on it's own to pull away from your hands.

For more information on these fisheries, give me a call.
Good luck and have fun.
