Miramichi, New Brunswick Canada: What an incredible outdoor experience and that’s being said with some of the more difficult conditions that have been seen in a number of years there. During the 15 days, we started with fair flows and favorable 60 degree water temps which kept a small push of fresh fish almost entering daily. Then the dry heat set in, the water dropped more than 30” during the last 8 days and warmed to as much as 78 degrees, a formula for limiting runs, more finicky takes and forcing fish to hold deep in pools which may or may not allow for much shade or oxygen.
Early on, success was prevalent on the Little Southwest Miramichi with much thanks to the knowledgeable guides that run out of the Upper Oxbow Outdoor Adventures in Sillikers New Brunswick. These guides would shuttle us to pretty much out of way private pools and runs which would show fish, now it’s up to the anglers to see if they are willing to take. Always having a positive feeling we were casting over fish, anticipating that unforgettable grab or pull was only a cast away and always hoping for that twisting leap offered by wild Atlantic Salmon. I felt fortunate as I was able to achieve all these during my short time on the water. Having six salmon come to my flies and landing two, one 5 pound grilse and one 12 pound salmon made my stay more than gratifying. For those who have not experienced this type of fly and spey fishing, I just can’t say enough that you must this experience on your bucket list, you won’t be disappointed.
When I arrived at the Lodge, I was immediately greeted by Debbie Norton and other staff members who made me feel right at home while making sure that I was comfortably moved into my large room which included a refrigerator, air conditioner and a full private bathroom. Once somewhat settled in and unpacked, the dinner bell rang loud and clear, and before I knew it I was at dinner with other guests being served a full course home style dinner. Before I could devour this great meal the girls came out and asked if anyone would like seconds. Like the eating fool I am, I did, only to find out I couldn't’t find room for the freshly baked brownie ala mode for desert, which they wrapped up and put in the fridge for me later to have. The staff here thinks of everything, guest services here are second to none! After dinner and unwinding from the 12 hours of driving, which included a few stops to stretch, fuel up and lunch, Debbie and I found ourselves busy preparing for the upcoming Miramichi Salmon Classic Event during which I offered free spey casting clinics and continued preparing for the daily schedules for individual lessons and schools for the for the week.
The clinics, classes and schools were well received by those attending. Growing interests with the two handed casting strokes and how it can be beneficial with the single handed fly rod drew many questions and more on the water detailed demonstrations.
The first year of the two handed casting promotions at the lodge included the use of Hardy and Greys Spey, and Scandi Rods. Single handed fly rods were available for everyone to try. Each rod was lined up with appropriate Airflo Lines and Rio Tips. For those who had reserved lodging, with Upper Oxbow Outdoor Adventures, they also had daily opportunities to use any of these rod set ups on their guided day trips. Many of the guests took advantage of this opportunity as they compared lines rods and reels during the day on their own.
This program was so well received that Debbie has again scheduled me for next year from July 1 thru July 11, 2013 with an expanded spey casting school curriculum. There will be 2 two day schools scheduled, with four students per school, a total of eight students. Two day Schools can consist of beginners and intermediate casters. Advanced lessons will also be offered for up to two students. Two hour lessons, which are tailored to your abilities, are limited to two students per lesson. The 2013 complete Spey School itinerary will be made available soon and will be posted up on the new Upper Oxbow Outdoor Adventures web site and on Walt Geryk’s www.neffguide.com
Free casting clinics will continue to be offered after lunch each day. Equipment, lines, fishing and casting interactive seminars will be scheduled as requested.
The Miramichi Salmon Classic Event also has limited rods and I suggest that early registrations are important to save your guides and water for the three day event. This a wonderful event which allows you to see and fish 5 different sections of highly productive private waters. This year’s sign up fee of $350.00 was in order and what a great bargain. This included a first class banquet and dinner on Sunday evening which included raffles and auctions to benefit the Miramichi Salmon Association, MSA, a group that is extremely instrumental in keeping Wild Atlantic Salmon Fishing a successful adventure for all fishermen. This event and lodging fill quickly.

Spey casting and fishing is a style used in fly fishing which allows for longer casts without an overhead back cast. Spey casting requires longer two-handed fly rods with specifically tapered designed lines that allow for easier multiple casts resulting in longer distances. Spey casting can also be achieved with single handed rods of 9 to 11 feet once the spey casing basics have been mastered.
Be part of this growing sport and see how you can easily advance your current fly fishing skills. These schools are for all levels of experience which allow you to gain confidence and advance your current casting and fishing abilities. Learning two-handed and single hand spey fly casting, with the many proven techniques and presentations acquired by Walt's traditional fly fishing experiences, since 1972, are sure to make you a better angler.
